Design Stories: The Coral Reef Clutch

Dive in – our latest edition of Design Stories shines a light on one of the most special pieces from our SS19 collection: the coral reef clutch. From first sketches to the final product, here’s an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how the hand-embellished design was brought to life…

The Inspiration

“I wanted to create an explosion of colour and embellishment,” explains Jasmine, Assistant Jewellery and Embellishment Designer at Accessorize. “I was inspired by my trip to India and the colours, textures and craftmanship that I saw there. I spent some time delving through threads, sequins and beads to build up texture and create something truly unique.”

After being designed in our London studio, each clutch bag was then hand-embellished with scores of beads in beautifully bold, vibrant hues in an artful depiction of our oceans’ colourful coral reefs. By using a mix of shapes and textures, our talented craftspeople were able to add tactile interest to each piece which has been finished with a sleek satin lining and woven jute on the back.

The Monsoon Accessorize Trust: Phia Foundation

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Monsoon Accessorize Trust, we’re looking back at some of our key charity projects and finding out how they’ve changed the lives of communities and individuals across India and the UK. Next up, we’re finding out about the Phia Foundation, a public trust which aims to help end poverty in India, and how they’ve brought education to an urban slum near Delhi.

The Project

Located on the outskirts of Delhi, Bhowapur’s rag-picking slum is inhabited by an estimated 5,000 people, with families living in extreme poverty. The area lacks basic amenities such as housing, electricity, water, sanitation and healthcare, and children also have no access to education.

Through their partnership with Christian Aid, the Monsoon Accessorize Trust have been able to support the Phia Foundation with a grant to help set up ‘bridge schools’ – small-scale education initiatives for children aged three to 14 years. Run by trained community leaders, these centres provide pupils with basic education, as well as clean water and nutritional support (such as fresh fruit) to ensure children are fed and therefore more able to concentrate in their lessons. Children are also encouraged to explore their creativity with song, dance and art classes, and are often taken out for educational and recreational trips.

So far, 67 children have been enrolled back into mainstream education and the Phia Foundation continue to monitor their progress and support them further with extra classes. It’s hoped that the initiative will help break the cycle of poverty and transform the lives of thousands of poor children.

Rakhi’s Story

Twelve-year-old Rakhi lives in the Bhowapur slum with her five siblings and mother, who works as a maid in the local area. She has enrolled in the nearby municipal school in Ghazipur, thanks to her focus and hard work, as well as the efforts of her teachers at the bridge school. She enjoys her lessons and is doing well in the curriculum, having scored 85% in the annual exam.

Once she returns home, Rakhi has extra classes at the bridge school to help support her education. This has helped improve her confidence and she regularly takes part in extra-curricular activities and school-level contests such as essay-writing competitions.

In her spare time, Rakhi enjoys singing, dancing and drawing. She hopes to become a police officer when she grows up.

The Monsoon Accessorize Trust: Christian Aid

For the last 25 years, the Monsoon Accessorize Trust has been working with charities and supporting projects that impact the most disadvantaged and vulnerable women and children in communities across Asia and the UK. For one of our initiatives, we’ve teamed up with Christian Aid to offer silk production training to local women’s groups in Herat, Afghanistan, a project which aims to empower individuals as well as helping to sustain an age-old craft.

The Project

Together with Christian Aid, a UK-based charity who aim to help end global poverty, we’ve spent the last four years working with local women’s groups to help revive and rebuild the silk cultivation industry in Afghanistan. Women are provided with silkworms and training on silk production to make their own products, which are then sold in bazaars and in a small shop in Herat International Airport. This project helps local women earn an income, become more financially independent and have a stronger voice in their communities.

Tabarok’s Story

Taborak was diagnosed with depression after losing her daughter and suffering from two strokes which left her hospitalised. Concerned for her wellbeing as well as her financial situation, doctors advised her to find work as soon as she was back to good health.

She joined the silk weaving program set up by Christian Aid and the Monsoon Accessorize Trust, and started to learn how to weave, as well as attending workshops on silk dying and designing. After completing the course, Taborak was provided with a loom and all the materials she needed to make silk garments from home.

She says, “I was very eager to learn weaving. It was enjoyable for me. I used to go earlier than the others to the weaving centre because I didn’t want to miss any of the training. Since taking part in the project, I haven’t had time to think about my past or anything else. After I learned weaving, I was given a loom and some other accessories. I spend most of my time behind the loom now.”

Tabarok sells the shawls she makes in the local bazaar, or to relatives and neighbours. Sometimes she also receives orders from local factories.

The Monsoon Accessorize Trust: Smile Foundation

As we celebrate 25 years of the Monsoon Accessorize Trust, we’re taking a closer look at some of our past projects with our charity partners and finding out more about the people and the communities that they’ve impacted. First up, the Smile Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in India who provided emergency healthcare during the 2018 Kerala floods…

What is the Smile Foundation?

Founded in 2002, the Smile Foundation is an India-based NGO with more than 350 welfare projects on education, healthcare and female empowerment in over 1000 remote villages and slums across the country. Committing to driving sustainable change and transforming lives, the foundation directly benefits over 750,000 children and families every year.

How were people impacted during the Kerala floods?

In August 2018, Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India, was hit by some of the worst floods in almost a century. Over 483 people lost their lives in the devastating natural disaster and more than one million people were displaced.

Floodwaters submerged entire villages and triggered landslides in the mountains, as well as swamping the coastal regions of Kerala. As a result, many health centres, particularly in the Kuttanad region, collapsed or had been forced to close, leaving many people and long-term patients without access to the help and medication that they needed. Kerala was faced with a medical crisis, with growing concerns that vector-borne diseases – such as cholera and malaria – would also spread.

How did the Smile Foundation help?

The foundation set up emergency health camps – named Smile Health Camps – in Kerala, partly funded by the Monsoon Accessorize Trust’s £20,000 grant. They treated almost 1000 people for over 20 types of illnesses after the floods, including 82-year-old Meenakshiyamma who was suffering from a fever and dizziness. Affectionately nicknamed Ammaji (grandma) by the other patients, Meenakshiyamma was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and praised the medical support and encouragement that she received from the camp’s staff and volunteers.

Design Stories: The Amalfi Vacation Print

Say ciao to our new and exclusive Amalfi Vacation print, inspired by our designer’s childhood holidays to the Italian coast. Dreamt up in our London studio, hand-painted prints mix with bursts of bright colour to create sunlit styles laden with nostalgia. Discover the design story now…

The Inspiration

Proving that every summer has a story, our print designer Alice created a hand-painted postcard of the Amalfi Coast, inspired by the time she spent painting there with her dad. The freedom that he expressed in his work was a key influence for Alice and she was keen to evoke the same feeling in her own print.

An iconic holiday destination known for its cliff-clinging abodes and craggy mountains plunging deep into the crisp blue waters of the Mediterranean, the natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast has been depicted with bold, vivid colours and the artful layering of florals and fruit. The SS19 collections of Michael Kors and REDValentino also served up style inspiration, with both designers having showcased vacation prints on the most recent runways.

The Pieces

Conjuring up memories of summers past, our exclusively-designed Amalfi Vacation print can be found across this season’s key accessories, from vinyl totes and embellished clutch bags to wind-blown scarves, crafted from recycled materials. Striking yet effortlessly versatile, the print easily translates from coastal destinations to sun-kissed days in the city.

Fashion Revolution Week 2019: Who Made My Clothes?

Here at Accessorize, we’re proud to support Fashion Revolution Week’s (22nd-28th April 2019) #whomademyclothes campaign, demanding greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. The global movement aims to radically change the way clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, and help ensure that people, the environment, creativity and profit are all valued in equal measure. As a brand, we’re committed to sourcing responsibly and understanding our supply chain and doing right by the people who make our most beautiful things – here are just some of the talented artisans that we work with…

1. The Multicolour Stripe Swimsuit

Tapping into the rainbow trend, our multicolour stripe swimsuit is spliced with bright blocks of pink, red, yellow, blue and green for an eye-catching effect. It’s cut with a flattering wrap neckline and waist-defining ties, as well as criss-cross straps on the back – perfect for showing off sun-kissed skin.

Made by Lu and Li

Lu Songnian, 30, and Li Shuoling, 31, are a married couple with two young children. They met in the same factory – Lu is a sewing worker while Li has recently been promoted to a process improvement technician. In their spare time, the couple enjoy going for walks, taking selfies and attending the theatre together.

2. The Tropicana Statement Necklace

Embrace the exotic – our Tropicana statement necklace is lavishly embellished with gemstones, beads and 3D flowers in high-octane hues of green, pink and yellow while the back is fully lined for a smooth and snag-free fit.

Made by Mumtaz

Mumtaz is an artisan who specialises in hand-embellishment at one of our suppliers. He was keen to talk about his craft, which is commonly referred to as adda or aari work in northern India where many skilled craftspeople are keeping the traditional technique alive. The process involves tying fabric to a wooden frame and adorning its surface with beads and sequins using specific stitches, giving garments a rich, unique look.

3. The Cockatoo Earrings

There’s no shortage of tropical vibes with our embellished cockatoo earrings, carefully adorned with small-scale beads and gemstones in a sunshine-ready colour palette. Raffia feathers add a playful touch to this statement-making pair.

Made by Mohd

Mohd Ehsaan, 33, is an artisan who has been an embellishment worker at one of our jewellery suppliers for last five years. Talented with an eye for detail, he creates beautiful pieces for Accessorize.

Originally from the small village of Sitarim Zila from eastern India, Mohd moved to New Delhi to find work and better support his family. He’s been married to wife Mehnaaz Khatoon for 12 years and the couple have two children together –Mohd Shakib, nine, and Nabg, 11. He loves spending time with his children and telling them stories about his own childhood.

International Women’s Day: Meet the Inspiring Women at Accessorize

This year, International Women’s Day’s #BalanceforBetter campaign is calling for a more gender-equal world, especially within the workplace. To celebrate and support their message, we’re introducing you to some of the inspiring women at Accessorize – read on to see what makes them tick and how they’ve shaped their careers, plus find out more about the women who empower them to be the best version of themselves.

Colette Wells, IT Project Manager

What empowers you as a woman?

I am very competitive. It must be in my genes as my whole family loves a good challenge. I feel empowered using my own competitiveness with myself to always be a little bit better than I am the day before, whether that’s personally or professionally. I’m big on self-reflection, some say I’m too hard on myself but I do practice self-care. Those combined make me who I am. I learnt a long time ago to own my mistakes and learn from them and be proud of my achievements and celebrate them. My anxiety comes in sometimes which knocks confidence, naturally.  Each time this happens, I try not to worry too much about others judging me. It doesn’t matter if they are because that’s their issue, not mine. I’m trying to keep it simple and be a little better each day. Finding what drives you to be you is key.

Do you have any tips for women wanting to enter this field of work?

Traditionally, IT is a male-dominated environment therefore preparation is key. Ask for the agenda first to understand the topics. If you don’t know an area being covered, look it up. In a meeting, always ask questions if you don’t understand something. If someone listens and give you an honest answer, they’re going to be a valuable colleague. If they talk over you, others in the room will notice. People, both male and female, often assume that women can’t be interested in tech or be ‘techy’. They view technology as working in a dark room with computers and games which it really isn’t! Understanding technology empowers us to understand our environment and progress forward. In every meeting where I don’t know something, I’ll ask the questions and learn from them so that in the next meeting or on the next project, I’ll be that bit more prepared.

What’s your greatest achievement?

When I was 16, I was training to be a professional dancer. I then went on to perform in musicals and teach ballet. Due to the demands dancing puts on your body and a few surgeries, I had to retire early and change my entire career. At 26, I was retraining to become a project manager in IT. I’m thankful that from the years of discipline and dedication that dancing teaches you, completely changing my career wasn’t as scary. I knew I could start at the bottom as work up again. Five years on, I’m an accredited project manager working in an industry I love, doing something I’m good at. My advice to anyone thinking of making a career change? Yes, it’s scary but embrace it because it’s possible – you just have to want it.

Rebecca Thompson, Assistant Buyer

Which women have inspired you most in your life and why?

As cliché as it may sound, someone who has always inspired me, even from a young age, is my mum. Her unconditional selflessness, patience and kindness to everyone around her is amazing and inspirational. If everyone could be even half as lovely as her, the world would be a far more positive place.

I also find women in the public eye using their platform to spread positive messages extremely empowering. Jameela Jamil is a great example of this. Her ongoing @i_weigh campaign promotes body confidence and challenges us to see beyond how we look, how much we weigh and to stop judging ourselves and each other on these trivial attributes. She also speaks out about the harmful effects of Photoshopping and airbrushing, and urges the media to stop promoting unrealistic body standards. She talks openly and honestly about her own painful experiences and is brave enough to challenge what we, as a society, have come to accept as the “norm”.

Why do you think it’s important that businesses strive for gender equality?

Gender inequality is dated and backwards. Why wouldn’t your business want the most qualified and personable employee they can find? Whether that is a woman or a man, it should make no difference and they should be paid based on their skill set, not what gender they identify with. Everyone on this planet is equal and everyone deserves the same opportunities.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Comparing yourself to others is not only unproductive but also completely inaccurate. You can never be sure what someone else’s situation is, what they are going through and what they’re intentions are. Also friendships are everything – nurture them and never take them for granted.

Omotola Olaoke, E-Commerce Developer

Which women have inspired you most in your life and why?

Nearly every woman I know. As corny as it sounds, a lot of the women around me have inspired me in many ways and for different reasons. My close friends who are like my sisters have been a wonderful inspiration and still are. My biological sisters too, even though they are younger than me. But I have to say that my mum has inspired me the most. Her hardworking and ‘there’s-always-a-way’ attitude gives me every reason to try my best to achieve whatever I want in life.

Why do you think it’s important that businesses strive for gender equality?

It’s important, not just for the success of the business, but for working women to know that they belong. Where there’s a lack of equality in the workplace, women aren’t attracted to apply for certain roles meaning that companies are missing out on what the female voice brings, and problems can’t be approached from a wider set of perspectives without them. When women are represented fairly and equally, they perform better, which overall improves their role and quality of work.

Kitty Lawrence, Stylist

What do you like about working in a female-dominated company?

It’s empowering and inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented women of all ages striving to do their best! It’s also very relatable, working with creatives that share the same interests as you. And it’s a lot of fun!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Never get a fringe!

What motivated you to pursue this career path?

Project Runway – is that lame?! But also my mum. I’ve loved fashion since I can remember and my mother has incredible style that always seizes to amaze me (she’s forever telling me not to wear so much black!). I was given a small sewing machine (it could literally fold up into itself and be carried by one hand) when I was younger and I taught myself to sew and then went to design school in New Zealand and loved it! There is so much incredible talent and passion in the fashion industry and I wanted to be a part of it.
